Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has any information/ research on the possible relation between LSD/ hallucinogen use and fertility problems/ chromosomal damage. I was speaking to someone the other day who was told by her doctor that her excessive (every day for 3 months) use of LSD is the probable reason for her inability to conceive a child.
He also told her that this would have happened with even a lower dosage of LSD. Since I'm sure a lot of kids/people that use LSD are planning to have healthy children ONE of these days, I would really be interested in finding out more about this belief/statement. I heard that this was a rumor/ scare tactic used a while ago, but does anyone know if it has any truth behind it?
Dr Chalz replied:
The idea that LSD may be associated with chromosomal damage is an old one & is an example of irresponsible scare tactics because to date this association has not been proved, in fact a whole new generation of 'normal' young adults of parents of the 60s is evidence of this lack of association.
Fertility (the ability by both man & woman to create a pregnancy) may be effected while substances like LSD are being actively used, but I again know of no evidence associating LSD with longer term effects on fertility.
Teratogenicity (effects of substances on a developing foetus) causing congenital abnormalities (birth defects) is another whole story, & all substances including LSD & ecstasy should be COMPLETELY AVOIDED if one is pregnant or trying to fall pregnant.
