Green Triangle DXM Warning

Those pills called 'Green Triangles' still seem to be causing havoc. It was a big problem in the USA over the summer, and now (Winter 1999), they are appearing in London, UK.

The following is from the UK DJ Mag No.54 4-17 Dec 1999:

'London police are calling an amnesty for ecstasy users to hand in their personal supplies, "no questions asked", following the death of an Australian tourist who died after taking a 'green triangle' pill which he believed to be ecstasy. Police believe there are significant amounts of contaminated or non-ecstasy pills being sold in the capital, possibly containing another drug DXM which has intense, ketamine-like properties and is potentially fatal when mixed with MDMA. '

This is some more info about this pill & DXM from DanceSafe in the USA, who confirmed the situation and provided some more info of Green Triangles:

'Yes, the Green triangle warning is genuine. We released it last summer, when
these pills were all over the US. Now they seem to be going away as more
people are aware of them, but they have shown up in London recently.'

Here is the original message:

'This is Emanuel from DanceSafe. We put a warning out last week about the
green triangles going around containing high doses of DXM, the chemical in
Robitussin cough syrup. We would like to raise the level of our warning in
response to the high number of Green triangle casualties at Quest.

Before we left at 3:00am, eight people had already been sent away ambulances
after consuming one or more of these pills. Once again, the current green
triangles do not contain any ecstasy. Rather, they contain dextromethorphan
(DXM). Taking one of these pills is the equivalent of downing an entire
bottle of Robitussin cough syrup. The effects of DXM vary, but generally,
it doesn't make you feel good. It makes most people dizzy and very "out of
it," and some people experience hallucinations. In some people, it makes
their skin itch. Virtually nobody feels like dancing on DXM. And some
people have such a bad reaction that they need to be hospitalised! This drug
is nothing like ecstasy. It was put in these pills only because it is
cheaper and the manufacturers can make more profits.

WARNING!

This drug is VERY DANGEROUS to take along with real ecstasy! DXM and MDMA
(real ecstasy) are "contraindicated." This means that if they are taken together, it can create a life-threatening situation.

This is because both drugs are metabolised through the same liver enzyme
(CYP-2D6) and inhibit the breakdown of each other.

YOU CAN EASILY OVERDOSE IF YOU MIX DXM AND ECSTASY!

What is particularly frightening about this situation, aside from the fact that
SO MANY of these pills were going around, is that a lot of people, after taking
a green triangle and realising it was fake, wanted to take some real
ecstasy in the hopes that it would make them feel better. We counselled many
people last night to resist this temptation and NOT take any other ecstasy
tablets during the night. We understand how let down someone might feel
wanting to experience the mild, pleasant empathy of ecstasy -- conducive to
dancing -- and then suddenly finding themselves feeling wasted, completely
out of it, and totally unable to dance.

The temptation to find a real ecstasy tablet at this point may be very great
for some people. While we were able to convince some people to resist this
urge, some people gave in and a few ended up hospitalised.

Please, whoever is selling the green triangles, STOP selling them. Take a
loss for the sake of somebody else's life. If you have a green triangle, DO
NOT TAKE IT.

DXM is not very pleasant, and is dangerous if mixed with Ecstasy. If
everybody helps spread the word about these pills, we can get them out of
the community, and perhaps save somebody's life.'

We also recevied this warning on the 12th December 1999:

'I'm from the US and i took a pill similar to the green triangle it was a blueberry. It has dxm or ketamine in it and should not be taken! They aren't here in COLORADO anymore but they could have spread somewhere else. Just lettin u know. Peace'
